Mature age apprentices, over 21 years old, bring a unique set of skills to the workplace that can benefit your business. At Master Builders, we’re seeing firsthand how these individuals bring maturity, motivation, and real-world experience that delivers immediate value on-site.
Mature age apprentices come with experience from other workplaces, careers and businesses. Most are now in a position where they have decided that they want to leave their current careers to explore their passion for building and construction. For mature age people, this is a big career changing moment because they are essentially starting again in a different industry. They will be committed to learning the trade and helping you and your business.
With a solid work ethic, strong communication skills, and a clear understanding of workplace expectations, mature age apprentices strengthen your team. Some might have prior construction industry experience, most will have their own vehicle, and they often bring additional skills like customer service, problem solving and networking to the table.
Good for Business
Mature age apprentices are thoughtful and goal-driven, often striving hard to complete their apprenticeship because they’ve made a deliberate career change. They’re focused on learning the trade itself and following their passion for building.
Their reliability and professionalism mean you’re not having to provide as much training in workplace expectations, rather focusing on training the skills of the trade. With mature age apprentices, you’re building a productive workforce with people who show up, are reliable, and ready to work.
Mature age apprentices understand what’s expected in the workplace, and their life experience helps them communicate effectively with clients, colleagues, and supervisors. These skills make them a valuable asset on-site and in business. Mature age apprentices understand that all these skills are important for representing your business and brand.
More often than not, depending on their life experiences, you could also actually learn a thing or two from a mature age apprentice. They are more likely to be supportive and helpful to you and others onsite. And could also be a good ear to lean on.
Their previous experiences could also help in problem-solving and decision-making in a timelier manner. Adding to that, reliability and maturity can create a positive and productive work environment.
Act Now so you Don’t Miss Out
With demand growing across the industry, good mature age apprentices are being snapped up quickly. Employers who wait may miss out on the opportunity to add a dependable, skilled team member to their crew. That’s why now is the time to act.
This May, Master Builders is supporting a new cohort of mature age apprentices through our Adult Apprenticeship Commencement Training Program (AACP). Starting from Monday 12 May, this intensive program prepares mature age apprentices for the building and construction industry.
Work health and safety practices are a key focus of the training program. During the program, apprentices complete comprehensive safety training, including manual handling, working safely at heights, and the safe use of power tools. They also receive a general safety induction to ensure they meet industry standards from day one.
The apprentices will participate in foundational Carpentry skills training with Master Builders industry expert trainers. Every apprentice in the program is over the age of 21. They will complete six units of competency toward the nationally recognised CPC30220 Certificate III in Carpentry.
By the end of the two-week program, the mature age candidates come to you job ready. They are eager to make a new start and are ready to contribute meaningfully to your business.
