Are you a high school student with an interest in the building and construction industry? A SBAT could be your opportunity to gain hands-on experience, earn while you learn, and set yourself on the path to a rewarding career.

Set yourself up for a career in constructionwhile completing your hsc.

A school based apprenticeship or traineeship (SBAT) is more than just a part-time or casual job. It gives you a head start towards a trade apprenticeship while you are in Year 11 and 12. The SBAT program combines on the job industry experience, vocational training and your HSC. And best of all, you get paid to learn. 

The on-the-job and off-the-job training undertaken during senior high school years can count towards the HSC.

School-based apprentices commence full-time employment as a 2nd-year apprentice after completing their HSC, provided that the first stage of the apprenticeship training has been completed before the end of the HSC year.

By choosing an SBAT, you can:

  • Work part-time in a real job with an employer in the construction sector.
  • Gain nationally recognized qualifications that are valued by employers.
  • Build hands-on experience in the trades, including carpentry, plumbing, electrical work, and more.
  • Continue your studies and attend school while developing your skills in the workplace.

How tostart?

  • The completion of your Higher School Certificate significantly impacts your options after school. In year 10, prior to selecting subjects, do your research.
  • Speak with your Careers Advisor about a School-Based Apprenticeship in Carpentry.
  • Discuss all your options with your parents or caregivers as they know you best.
  • To start the SBAT program you need to find an employer.
  • Master Builders can enrol you into the SBAT in Carpentry program and help you find a host employer.

  • Once everything is set, you can start working, earning, and learning while still attending school.

  • We'll provide you with carer advice to help you choose your apprenticeship or traineeship pathway.

Master Builders Field Officers play a big role in supporting and mentoring our apprentices.

Our role is to offer support to the apprentice and their Host Employer to get the best out of each other. This ensures a better workplace all around. We do this by maintaining open lines of communication, offering to address issues and offer advice. 

It is particularly important for young people and females for whom it may be their first job in the industry. Knowing our people is the key to their success and well-being.

Definitions

This document outlines the direct debit arrangements between Master Builders Association of NSW Pty Ltd, ABN 11 074 397 532 (MBANSW) and you.

MBANSW is the registered Group Training Organisation and Apprenticeship Services arm of Master Builders Association of New South Wales, ABN 96 550 042 906 (Master Builders)

“You”, “your” and “Host Employer” refer to you, your company and business nominated in the table below.

This document outlines the direct debit arrangements between MBANSW and you.

Direct Debit Terms and Conditions

  • Your nominated account or credit card will be debited weekly for hosting a MBAS or MBAS+ apprentice or trainee.
  • The first debit to your account will occur within 7 working days of the MBAS or MBAS+ apprentice or trainee commencing their placement with your business.
  • If an invoice payment is due on a non-business day, it will be debited from your account on the following business day.
  • Host Employer account information held by MBANSW will be kept confidential. Please note that some information is provided to the MBANSW financial institution to initiate the debit to your nominated account.
  • MBANSW will give you a minimum of 14 days’ notice in writing of changes to these Terms and Conditions.
  • If you wish to make changes to this arrangement, please contact MBANSW on (02) 8586 3533.

Your responsibility in this arrangement

  • Ensure that your nominated account can accept direct debits (your financial institution can confirm this).
  • Ensure there are sufficient cleared funds in the nominated account on the drawing date.
  • Advise MBANSW in writing if the nominated account is transferred or closed.


Please note that if your payment is dishonoured by your financial institution, a re-draw will take place within 7 days.

Any transaction fees payable by MBANSW in respect to a dishonoured payment will be added to your account.
