Future Plumbers Gain Hands-On Industry Experience Through Head Start Program

Ten students from across the Campbelltown area have gained valuable insight into the plumbing and construction industries through a ten-day Head Start Program delivered at Thomas Reddall High School, Ambarvale.

Delivered as part of the NSW Department of Education’s Educational Pathways Program (EPP), the initiative was coordinated by the Master Builders Association of NSW (MBA) as Group Training Organisation (GTO), in partnership with Master Plumbers NSW RTO/Partner Provider and Thomas Reddall High School.

The program combined classroom-based learning, practical training and industry immersion, giving students the opportunity to develop foundational construction skills while experiencing the workplaces, technologies and career pathways available within the industry.

Students completed three vocationally relevant Units of Competency contributing towards Certificate III in Plumbing: CPCPCM2043 – Carry out WHS requirements, CPCPCM2046 – Use plumbing hand and power tools, and CPCPCM3023 – Fabricate and install non-ferrous pressure piping.

Practical training formed a significant part of the program, with students working in an adapted school workshop under the supervision of two trainers. The combination of theory and hands-on activities allowed students to apply their learning in a practical environment and build confidence using construction tools and equipment.

A key feature of the program was the opportunity for students to step outside the classroom through three industry immersion experiences.

The first visit was to Rheem Australia’s Rydalmere facility, where students toured the manufacturing plant, research and development laboratory and head office. They were able to see firsthand how products are designed, manufactured, tested and supported, before taking part in practical installation and servicing activities at Rheem’s dedicated training centre.

Students then visited the Watts Australia training centre in Caringbah. The session provided exposure to products across the Watts group, including thermostatic mixing valves and backflow prevention devices. A strong hands-on focus enabled students to further develop their understanding of plumbing systems and real-world industry practices.

The final immersion day featured Milwaukee Tools, where students were introduced to the latest hand and power tools used across the construction industry.

The closing day also incorporated an employment-readiness workshop delivered by Master Builders, covering resume development, mock interviews and preparation for future employer interviews. The session concluded with a graduation event recognising the students’ participation and achievements.

Importantly, all ten students successfully completed all three enrolled Units of Competency.

The program highlighted the value of collaboration between industry, education and training organisations in creating meaningful pathways for young people. Support from Master Builders NSW, Master Plumbers NSW, Thomas Reddall High School, the area Head of Careers and participating industry partners helped ensure students received both quality training and authentic exposure to the construction sector.

For the students involved, the program provided more than an introduction to plumbing and construction. It offered a practical opportunity to explore potential careers, develop workplace skills and experience firsthand the opportunities available within a diverse and evolving industry.
