The Master Builders Pre-Apprenticeship Program to Kickstart a Carpentry Trade.

Our Pre-Apprenticeship program is a great pathway for young people to get a taste of the Carpentry trade. And best of all, it is fee-free!

The Pre-Apprenticeship program continues to gain momentum as a popular choice for young people entering the industry. Held at the Master Builders Education Centre in Norwest, it is a three-week program with the perfect blend of theoretical classes and practical Carpentry workshop skills. The program includes training in Carpentry framing, foundations, and flooring.

The program gives students the opportunity to make new connections and acquire new skills in an intensive, jam-packed three-week period. The Master Builders Pre-Apprenticeship program is a stepping stone to help young people transition from school to the workplace and provides a pathway to start an apprenticeship. It also gives them valuable exposure to Carpentry, helping them decide if it’s the trade for them. Master Builders is proud help young people prepare for their future careers in the industry, and this is a fantastic pathway.

“Our Pre-Apprenticeship program equips young people with introductory Carpentry skills, confidence, and connections — so that they are job ready to start on your worksite,” says Darin Grace, Education and Skills Manager.

To be eligible for a fee-free Pre-Apprenticeship with Master Builders, the following criteria apply:

  • be 15 years old or over
  • live or work in New South Wales
  • be an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident, Australian permanent humanitarian visa holder or New Zealand citizen, and
  • no longer be at school or equivalent. View the compulsory school leaving age for NSW students.

As well as the introductory Carpentry skills, the Master Builders Pre-Apprenticeship program also includes essential work health and safety practices by completing training courses:

  • Work Safely at Heights
  • Safe Use of Power Tools, and
  • Manual Handling.

On successful completion, participants receive six units of competency that count towards their Certificate III in Carpentry qualification when they commence their apprenticeship.

Our goal is to equip them for success in the industry, so, alongside the skills program, we encourage young people to prepare a well-presented resume and cover letter to highlight their passion for the trade and motivation to start an apprenticeship.

“My son Charlie really felt like he got a lot out of the 3 week pre-apprenticeship program and he enjoyed it. It’s a great course for young people. I appreciate what my son and his classmates learnt from the trainers at Master Builders”, says Lilly, Charlie’s mother.

Each participant is provided with a Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) backpack consisting of gloves, hard hat, eye and ear protection, hi-vis shirts, water bottle and carpenters’ pencil — everything they’ll have all the essentials to start their first day on the job safely.

These young people are the future of the industry and are eager to begin their Carpentry apprenticeships. Therefore, we are looking for Host Employers who will give these young people a chance to learn the trade on their worksites through on-the-job practical training aligned with their Certificate III Carpentry training.
