Mental Health Australia congratulates the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) and the governments across Australia on the release of the NDIS Psychosocial Disability Recovery-Orientated Framework(link is external).
The Recovery Framework aims to improve the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) experience for participants, their families, and carers by setting out principles to guide the NDIS in its understanding of, and improved responses to, people living with a psychosocial disability.
Mental Health Australia CEO Dr Leanne Beagley said that “the Framework is a milestone in recognising the importance of recovery in the provision of community-based support for people with psychosocial disability within the NDIS.”
“Mental Health Australia has worked closely with the NDIA in the development of the Framework and strongly supports its aim to ensure that participants living with psychosocial disability are supported in their recovery journey to live a meaningful life in their community and can access and choose supports that enable independence and social and economic participation” she said.
People with psychosocial disability were not originally covered by the NDIS which has meant that there has been the need for ongoing advocacy by Mental Health Australia and others to address systemic barriers to their participation.
“It is pleasing to see these efforts result in such significant shift in the way the NDIS will be delivering its services to people with a psychosocial disability in the future,” she said.
