Stories from the Site: Camilla. A year ago, Camilla Symons was stuck in a rut. Working in an office job. She was poorly paid and unstimulated. Fast forward and Camilla, today, is thriving. Happy, busy, and excited for the future. And she has Master Builders NSW to thank. She is a Master Builders NSW apprentice. You could, too.
Camilla is not your stereotypical building apprentice, but she loves it. After 8 years in corporate Australia, Camilla took a leap of faith and signed up for an apprenticeship through Master Builders NSW. Camilla was keen to learn on the job and use her practical skills. The Master Builders NSW Apprenticeship Services program made this simple.
What does Camilla like most about her building apprenticeship? “I like being part of a small, close team. Everyone works together to achieve a common goal, in this case, undertaking a major two-story renovation to a house in Sydney’s Leichhardt,” says Camilla. “A small team means that I get to be part of every process from demolition to installing the framework. I am learning so much, so quickly.”
Camilla is not alone. There are more and more women choosing careers in construction. More women are participating in Master Builders Education and training programs than ever before. There are five times more females enrolled in 2021 than there were in the three years previous.
According to the latest industry trend figures from Master Builders Australia, there are 367,588 people employed in the construction industry in NSW. 13.2% are women. Since the year 2000, female employment in the construction industry has doubled, with the largest amount of growth in the last 5 years. (Source Master Builders Australia February 2021, ABS data).
For Camilla being a female in a male-dominated industry has been no problem. “I am surrounded by males, of course, but every person I meet treats me as they would any other tradesperson,” says Camilla. “Being a female offers a new experience to everyone on site and presents the opportunity for some great banter. And great banter we do have!”
