HAZCHEM
WHS legislation refers to dangerous goods by the term ‘hazardous chemicals’.
Reducing exposure to hazardous chemicals at work is essential to creating a healthy, safe, and productive workplace and a key focus area in the SafeWork NSW Regulatory Priorities for 2023.
Over the past four years, there have been more than 6500 injuries in NSW workplaces as a result of poor handling or storage of hazardous chemicals. Eight people died and more than 250 are now permanently disabled.
There are thousands of hazardous chemicals used in the workplace, from paints to pesticides, glue, cleaners, and fuels. They come in various forms – powders, solids, liquids and gases.
Safety Data Sheets (SDS) set out the Hazards, Risks, and Controls for each product, must be kept on-site and be easily available for reference. SDS are available to download from the manufacturer’s website just search for the product SDS – e.g. SIKA CONTACT FIX SDS
It is a WHS requirement that all workers are inducted onto the SDS (Hazchem training) for all hazardous chemicals used in your work.
Always check the back of the product, for HAZCHEMs you will find GHS Pictograms (below) that will alert you to the hazard the chemicals present. Also, look for the words DANGER I WARNING.
